You didn't indicate what your shooting locations and needs are, or a budget.

You pay more for features, higher flash sync, distance, isolation from other radios, and longer battery life.

If you want simple and reliable and least expensive, get a Quantum Radio Slave II set used off of ebay for $100.

Sync at 250th, 100' reliable range. And if you are handy with a soldering iron, you can mount a hot shoe on the bottom of the transmitter. That's what I use exclusively.

But I never have to share venues with other radios, I never have long distances to cover. However, at the last Supershoot, I was on the same frequency as one other shooter, and had to change mine to the alternate channel.

If you upgrade later, you can resell them on eBay and get 99.9% of your money back.

A follow-up to my earlier reply..

First, we shoot quite a few weddings.. We don't have the time or interest to deal with stuff that might work in situation A but not in situation B so we use PocketWizards.

Second. Yes they are vertical but in the studio we velcro them flat to the top of the strobe. The trasmitter is mounted to the hot-shoe on the camera. Sure it sticks up but it's never been a problem. In the field we use the transmitter on the flash bracket and receivers are clamped to the light stands so no problems there.

Last.. we use the pocketwizard plus.. we don't have a use for the extra features of the multimax model.

Good luck with your decision and happy shooting..

Later,
Israel

the only down side of calumets i've heard is that they are all on the same frequency. so, if you have a problem of someone else's whatever on the same frequency, your strobes are gonna fire when you don't mean them to.
