I try to use my 70-200 in the studio, but usually it puts me too close to the model, too much zoom, no way I would use my extender...

Stick with Canon Glass. Nobody mentioned the new 16-35 2.8 USM which works great with a digital body. I have the 1D Mark II and for portrait, or feature shots it works great and you can still get a nice wide angle look with the added focal length of a digital body. The other great portrait lens is the 85 1.8 USM. Very nice in low light. The 70-200 2.8 L is a must have all-around lens. It should be the first lens anyone buys and will cover more types of shots than any other lens. A good used one can be had for around a thousand bucks.
Just my two cents
