Ok..under the circumstances (hotel room using only my D70 and an SB800 speedlight) I took this one. I kind of like it but thought I'd throw it out there as long as we seem to be in the mood to critique. I DID have a reflector available but, no one to hold the darn thing...what would you have done differently to improve the capture? Occationally, I find in my travels the opportunity to shoot with models and I would hate to carry around lights ALL the time...hard enough to keep my kit with me for that "Event" that may come up be it a model or some other news worthy event. Ideas?
Thanks, Ralph Haseltine

Ralph

First thing -- take the flash OFF the camera and use it like a strobe. Get a small (micro) tripod and put a flash shoe on it. Bounce the strobe into the reflector for more coverage. Use some black paper or Cinefoil or something to make a snoot for less coverage.

Hi Ralph,

RJ gave the best advice. You need to get the flash off of the camera. When you shoot with the flash on camera your image is really going to look just like a snapshot from a poiunt and shoot camera because the lighting is the same.

I would suggest getting it of camera and either using a reflector or at the very least one of the many softboxes that are made for the small flash guns. Another option is to bounce the flash off of the ceiling but you will need to fill in the eyes if you do this. I believe lumiquest has one adapter that allows some of the ligh out of the top to bounce off of the ceiling and some to go out of the front so basically you are getting fill and main from the same flash. I have never tried it so I can't say it does or doesn't work.

If you plan to do a lot of photography along these lines I would suggest getting a Vivitar 283 with the varipower module or a Vivitar 285 and a flash slave for it. Actually, you might even want to get two of them. They are pretty cheap on e-bay and even brand new mail order they are relatively inexpensive. You would also need to get a slah meter. You can also get adapters that will attach to a light stand and allow you to put your hotshoe mounted flashes on them. Of course you can use the small, lightweight light stands for this and it will make your lighting gear bag pretty small. It will be more than just carrying around your speed light, but it will allow you to create some much better images.

Excellent...and thanks for the info...this sounds like a viable solution. I really don't PLAN on this sort of thing, but, I always like being prepared..lol..I didn't plan on THIS shoot. I have a full studio in Elmhurst, Illinois and I also have a travel lite set for planned occations but that is rather bulky to keep lugging around with me. Something light will do the trick...thanks again...Ralph

Hey man. Sorry but I hate you LOL

I have been stood up by more models than I care to count over this summer and ended up only getting to shoot ONCE and you tell me that this shoot wasn't even planned. That is just not fair LOL

I am glad you found something useful in my advice. I find the 283s with the varipower module to be very reliable (I have ones I bought used 10 years ago that are still going fine). And very transportable. I have been playing with a Sunpak 120J lately that I will probably switch to for location work as the main since it has a barebulb, but 283s will still be used for background and kickers.
