OK experts, lens shopping.

I'm getting a D70.

It ships with a Nikon 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX zoom lens. This lens is designed for digital and gets nothing but glowing reviews.

If I want to get two more lenses, with a maximum budget of $600-$800 for both combined, what should I get?

I'm leaning towards the Nikon AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D prime as one of them, for around $350. This would be for portraits and studio glamour, etc.

1. Would you get this lens, assuming two more lenses and this budget?

2. What one other lens that fits this budget would you get? I've no need for wider than the 18-70 provides, thinking longer than the 85mm.

I'd look at the Nikon 70-300. I use it more than I imagined when I purchased it. Particularly doing fashion on location. There are several models. I have the ED version that still has the aperature ring. I have an N70 film camera and wanted the option. They also have a "G" version with no aperature ring that I think is under $150! Check B&H.

Kurt.
I do not wish to initiate a debate on this subject but in my humble opinion, I have found that one sticks with a piece of glass longer than with a body.

Now, if this premise is agreeable to you, I would have to reccomend that whenever you can, you rather consider one superior piece of glass rather than a couple "that fit the budget". Based on your questions, my answer to #1 is yes as it is a good lens based on the package deal with the D70. Getting it separately will increase the price and not make it as good of a buy. regarding question #2, I would reccomend the oft overlooked 2.8 105mm as this verstaile piece will cover macro work and fashion work not to mention the fact that it is tack sharp and quick. With these two and the 1.5 chip factor, you'll cover aprox 35-100mm with one and have a 150mm versatile prime with macro.

Once the finances improve, look into a fixed aperture zoom, perhaps the 70-200 2.8VR or anynof the smaller focal lengths; just try to get a constant aperture.
many will suggest a less expensive third party lens. I would not disagree heavily, so long as you get their premium line and try to stick to that low and constant aperture.

I hope this helps.

Greetings! Check out KEH for AF Nikkors, new and used. The rating system is extremely conservative and you'll be surprised with their "Excellent" rating. I'd get a 105 DC or the 135 DC, both are sharp. I have the 105 and have compared images to the 80-200 ED AF-S. IMHO, the 105 sparkles.

Just buy the camera, no kit, and for $300 B&H has a Nikon 28-200 3.5G. That will give you (in 35mmm) 42mm to 300mm focal lenghts. Buy the SB800 flash with the rest of your budget.

Many lenses to choose from Just buy them from ME at Unique Photo Inc.

The 18-70 is a good lens to have, and the price you pay is not so bad for the kit. So in relation of body and lens vs just body, get the kit. Really depends on what your going to shoot, so if you want drop me a line and we will see what we can do for a GG faithful such as yourself.

Thanks Jason.

The responses so far have only confused me more, lol...

I'll call you when I have cash on hand and we'll get it straightened out.

I agree, KEH has great stuff and works to make sure customers are happy. I'd go variable with ED glass.

You might also think about the 50mm 1.4. Or you can get the 1.8 for about a hundred bucks new. Im thinking that will be my next lense purchase. Love that limited DOF for portrait work! I agree buy from Jason at Unique hes been great to me. Matter of fact I bought my D-70 from him
