I have a Canon 10D. What is the purpose of having RAW file with JPEG embeded in the RAW file? You can save RAW to JPEG or TIFF after you have corrected the original RAW file to your liking. Why doesn't Canon just offer a RAW file without the embeded JPEG?

The embeded jpg has 2 purposes. one it is used for thumbnails and previews of the image. Two it can be extracted to make an "as shot" version of the image, which can save considerable time if you shots were dead on and don't require any RAW file manipulation.

I have the same fucntion with my Olympus E-1 but haven't used it yet.

How does that affect the amount of storage memory?

If you can adjust the size of the embeded .jpg you can raise or lower the amount of storage each shot takes up.

Since I am not good enough to get my shots perfect without a little manipulation in C1, I set the size of embeded jpgs to their smallest to get an extra 8 shots per 256mb CF card.

The JPG part is very small. I also make both files using the JPG for editing and selecting. I usually split them for this purpose, meaning I make a folder for all the files, then sort based on file type, then move all the JPGs to a sub-folder, and look through those files to make my selection because that way Photoshop CS does not have to make thumbnails from all those RAW files, which takes a long time. I don't think my D70 lets me choose how big the JPGs are (but I'm going to look into it). It only adds 800k to a 5mb RAW file, which on a 1gb card is not much. Actually I use Thumbs Plus for my selection/editing, its easier and faster at that than even the PS/CS browser. One more suggestion - set your camera to number your frames continously, rather than starting over at "001" each time you load a new card. That way not only do you have the actual shot sequence documented, you can dump all the files from a shoot into one folder without having them overwrite each other, or have to be renamed.
