I swear by the Westcott Micro Apollo myself. Note that it will block the autofocus assist beam however.

There are many of the small softbox type items for on camera flashes. But 'by an large' they don't offer much softness because of their size. Soft light comes from having a large light source close to the model. The further away it is, the harder the light becomes, and the closer, the softer. So when you use one of these items, you want to be sure to move as close as possible to the subject, to maximize the softness. I have found, that when possible, you get better results by bouncing the flash off of a low ceiling which makes the light into a quite large light source and evens it out rather nicely.

cheers,
rfs
