I have been curios about this as well. I searched online and most people seemed to think that an inverter would not be able to support the drain of most flash units. I am considering doing some tests. I was able to power my flash unit with a computer Battery Backup (UPS) in a test...not sure how long that would last, and the official response from the UPS manufacturer was that the unit is not made to be discharged on a regular basis, and continuously discharging and recharging the UPS would reduce its lifespan.

I would be curious to hear other ideas or results.

i am looking into the same stuff...the big key is the inverter...do your lights prefer or need a Pure sine wave or will thay Take a GOOD MODIFIED sine wave....i would be powering a 1000ws pack... so my inverter cost will be aabout 300$ for a modified sine wave or 700$ for a pure sine wave

Are you refering to a power inverter from a 12 volt system, say your car? I have used a 750 watt power inverter with two bowen studio lights (flash with modeling lights). It works, but suggest you get at least a 1000 watt unit. I have seen a 1000 inverter at Bj's or Home Depot. To save some power, ditch using the modeling light feature while shooting.

Hope it helps,

Now there's an interesting thing.. The URL in your message takes you to a portion of my portfolio.. Wonder if something is not right with GG... or if I'm the only one seeing this..

I probably won't be able to get an inverter around here for about a week. (all sold out because people use them during the hurricane)

I wonder how long (how many flashes) we could get out of car battery, or even a smaller marine battery. (with and without modeling light)

I work in the motion picture indusrty and the inverter we use most is the Xantrax Prosine 1800. Use it with some deep cycle marine batteries and you will have a reliable setup.

Who ever clicks on the url will be taken to their own portfolio on GG.

The poster tried to drag a photo onto his post from his portfolio which doesn't work at least for me.

Url is pointing to a php script "portfolio-selectpicture-portfolio.php#" that is not getting the photo number of the selected picture.

Apparently the default for this script is the current users portfolio.

I use a 700W one made by Vector I got from WalMart for about $60 and it works like a champ.

I can run to 500 w/s Britek strobes off it no problem. I attach it directly to the battery with the supplied cables and gator clips and run an heavy duty extension cord (the heavier the better so you don't lose anthing di to capacitance from the car to the location. It is best to keep the engine running, so the battery stays charged up all the time. I have not seen any increase in recycle time using the converter over conventional house current.
