...and I'm going back to shooting 35mm (I still haven't gone digital yet, I'm old fashioned), anyway, I'm using my Pentax (5-7yrs old). My question is do I really need to update my camera body or is it all in the lens, film, lighting?? I have a Metz flash and usually use Portra or the Fuji equivalent. Whatya think?

With 35mm film cameras, "it's all in the lens" as far as image quality is concerned. A new body may give you features that would make life easier, such as auto focus, better metering modes, ect. But none of that will make any difference on the actuall image (assuming you are using your old camera correctly to properly expose the negative). Now digital is a horse of a different color! With digital you NEED the latest body. You need the one they aren't making yet. You would sell your first born to get next years model TODAY!
Hope this helps
