Hello everyone!

I am new to this group, after lurking for a while. I am extremely impressed with some of the imagery I have seen thus, composition and beauty...outstanding!

Over the last twenty years I have been a studio shooter; the last 14 having my own studio/staff. I primarily shoot food, products, models/products..large and small sets...90% large format. I shoot for national/international advertising, catalog, packaging and editorial clients. Over the last seven years I have converted to shooting 100%...both scanning backs and single capture systems.

I am at a loss, trying to figure out how to get into the fashion/glamour realm of things, besides putting together a portfolio and pounding the pavement, which is a given. I guess I have had my head under the dark cloth for too long! Are there any decent workshops/seminars worth attending, allowing me to fine tune composition/ lighting?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

First -- welcome! We're glad you're here. I just answered a workshop thread on the Community Forum!

Two things I'd suggest -- take a look at the workshop forum here on GG. There are some good ones posted there. Ask around for people who have been to specific workshops and get there opinion on what the workshop is like.

My second suggestion is to do Rolando's workshop in Philadelphia. Take the train down from NYC and enjoy the ride! I don't remember when his first Philly workshop of 2003 is -- but check the workshops forum. If it's not posted, there's probably a link to Rolando's workshop site that will list dates.

As experienced a photographer as you are -- I think Rolando's workshop might be the right kind of opportunity to help move you to the glamour side of things. Rolando has the same experience -- he was a PJ that moved over to glamour. I'm sure he'd have things to share about the process of changing your vision as a photographer.

Best of luck and enjoy!

hello hal.
my name is rick, i too am a lurker of this medium.

there truly is a great deal of talent on this site, unfortunately there is also a great deal of whining from certain users which is quite a turn off for me.

if you're looking for seminars/workshops to fine tune composition and lighting i would suggest you keep your eyes open for jt smith's workshops. i had the pleasure of attending his 'mentor workshop' a few weeks ago, and although i was only there for a few hours, i learned a great deal about using existing light and model posing techniques. jt can light up the dark side of the moon with his handheld reflectors...seriously .

i've been a natural history (amateur) photographer for a number of years now, and i'm trying to get into the portraiture/glamour side of this bussiness.

good luck,

this image is from that workshop. the stunning ms. jessica king. a beautiful model with an even more stunning personality.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Nice to see you posting. Being a studio owner for so long, you're quite ahead of most folks already, as too many people open studios to only later shut them down.

Being in NY helps, great market for fashion/glamour, though a very competitive market. I think you're doing the right thing, pounding on doors and hitting the pavement. Add to that sending out cards and following up with art directors is the mold.

I think those are the basics, as well as networking. If you'd like more on composition and lighting and other glamour related topics, you may want to attend my 2003 Philadelphia workshop. It will be my fourth in Philly and I'll also have Fuji and Dyna-Lite there to answer any questions you may have, worse case scenario you will qualify for educational discounts from Dyna-Lite--just follow my link to my personal website for more information.

Again, welcome aboard, and have a great New Year...
