I realize I'm bringing up an old topic but it's one that's important and that I believe is still surrounded by a lot of fiction..

Today I recieved the latest issue of Enterprise Networks & Servers magazine. According to an article in this issue "Quality media produced over the past 4 to 5 years should have a data life up to at least 100 years." You can read the one page article at Debunking the Myth of CD/DVD Rot

I don't understand all this... I've read this before... but what confuses me is that I own several music CD's from different bands that are well over 5 years old...and they work just fine..

Am I missing something here??

The problem is reported to be with the dies used in recordable cds and dvds. The commercial dvds aren't recorded by burnng the die on the media like recordable ones are. Recordable cds, apparently, can fade so that eventually there isn't enough difference between the burned and non burned areas for the computer to read 1s and 0s.

Sorry I haven't replied.. For some reason I'm not getting notified when there are replies to my posts..

My belief has always been that name brand media is my best bet. That's not to say that off-brands aren't good, it's just that I value my work so saving a few penny's isn't worth the risk to me.

So, the traditional approarch is triple redundancy as far as you can afford to. I keep two copies on different hard drives and two on DVD's. That's more than 3 but I can afford it at the moment. Eventually, the hard drive copies will be on different computers.

One basic rule is to NEVER WORK ON THE ORIGINAL FILE. That's one reason I shoot everything in RAW whenever possible. I can't accidentally save to a NEF file.

I hope this helps.. If not, feel free to send me an e-mail or private message.
