Hello all, I posted a question on this forum about a month ago asking for information on flying with film and memory cards. I got a lot of good information from that post and now I want to update this forum with my own recent experiences.

I have had to do a lot of flying recently to cover events and the receptions I have received have been good. I live in Phoenix, AZ which has one of the largest/busiest airports in the USA. There are signs prominently posted at the Security Points advising travellers about the procedures for the handling of film. The first 2 times I flew I was using my digital camera so film was not an issue but I was asked by the Screeners if I wanted a hand inspection and to this my response was 'thank you but it is not needed'. A question that kept coming up and I am not sure why was 'is that a still or a video camera you have'. I am not sure why this is a point of concern but when I told the Screeners it was a still camera they appeared to be satisfied.

This last time I flew I had my film cameras with me and again I got a positive reception from the Screeners. I bought my film on location and unfortunately due to a very, very early Flight home and a late night I was not able to have my film processed before my departure. When I got to the Airport (Norfolk International) I produced my film in a clear Ziplock bag and specifically requested a hand inspection and my request was promptly honored. The Screener called a Supervisor and explained what I wanted and the Supervisor waited until I had gone through Security and then took me aside and in my presence took each canister out of the Ziplock bag and after looking at the canisters and putting all of them back into the bag returned to me and everything was fine.

I don't know what others on this Forum have experienced but my recent experience with film and flying been encouraging.

Thanks for posting the update!

On the video camera question. I carry my equipment in a Lightware bag. One of the screeners got all bent saying that I was supposed to take my video camera out of the case. I kept saying I didn't have a video camera. The supervisor recognized the bag and told her he'd handle it. He flipped the bag open. took a quick look, and passed me on.

I imagine that there's some kind of threat warning involving video cameras -- so security is higher on those. I used to carry a Vivitar 285 flash in my travel bag -- but a few months back I saw a security notice on homemade stun guns being disquised as large flashes, so I took it out of the bag.
