I've been trying to explain to my son that dark green grass is the same "color" as a battleship when shooting in b+w, but he is having a hard time accepting that.

Does anyone have good 'net examples of the Zone system in color?

I wonder how many people here actually know about the "Zone System" and it's creater, Ansel Adams......or know more about Ansel Adams other than just being a legend photographer who took some nice B&W shots in Yosemite Park...now that it is easy to look at the back of a digital camera and preview the shot.. and say...hmmmm that looks good to me.. I'd try doing a search on Ansel Adams in google.com.. You might find what you are looking for..

...I should update my profile to read: Favorite color = Zone 1

can't you flip the camera preview to black and white and
let him walk around with it and see for himself...

or show him some photos ?

I like to squint. The color becomes desaturated and I can see the tones.

Ed,

I believe you can pick up a Kodak Wratten 90 filter that will approximate the tones in a B&W print. The wratten 90 is the same filter that Fred Picker of ZoneVI used and promoted in his wkshops. I think I rember hearing that Ansel Adams also handed these out to his wkshop students to help in the visualization process.
