OK I have a DigiRebel... and I can change my LCD to lighten or darken it but it still is not very accurate. Is there anything I can do or is there any tricks at looking at the histogram anyone can share with me..?

Hey! If you find out, be sure to let me know! The damned LCD has some sort of (very effective too) compensation that makes even the piss poor shots look good so you go doodling along for a whole shoot 2 stops under exposed! I HATE that! I would rather have a way to turn off the compensation or at least tell us how to duplicate it in PS so we can fix the pictures...

Good luck, and let me know what you find out too!

I have digital rebel too. I set the LCD to lowest setting for indoor events, and to max for outdoor events. I actually don't use the histogram. I just make sure there is no blown-out highlights in the areas that should not be blown out. I shoot RAW all the time.

When shooting digital I always expose for the highlights. The best way I've found to ensure a proper exposure is to use the histogram. Basically all I do is check the histogram and make sure I have the highlight side (the right side) as close to the right as I can get it without going out of the scale. If it is over the edge then I stop down half a stop and try again. If it is not up to the edge then I open up half a stop and try again. Of cours I still use a hand held meter to get in the ball park first and to check the lighting ratios. I just use the historgram to fine tune the exposure.

I shoot with a 10D and have my view set to 'hold with info' It holds the view there until I shoot again or access the menu. It also shows the histogram and detailed info about the shot. It should be under your view options in the menu bar.

Without endorsing any particular publication, the Sep 04 issue of Outdoor Photographer has an article that answered alot of my questions concerning the use of the "histogram".
Hope that helps. Great photo!

The main thing to keep in mind about histograms is that they show what it would be for a JPEG image; even if you are shooting in RAW mode. That said, there's variations in the way these things are illuminated: The D60 and 10D use completely different illumination systems, which is why they never match if shot together. I don't know what they use on the DR, but in my expeerience over using one for three months I found the screen to be a good indicator of the final image.
