If one is getting a D-70, and also windowshopping for lenses for same, what is the deal with knowing which of the many fine Nikon lenses will fit the beast?

I know little about adapter rings, or the nomenclature regarding autofocus versus manual focus lenses etc.

Am I correct in thinking some lenses made by Nikon will fit on the D-70, but others will not fit?

If yes, what keywords or acronyms on a typical website such as Adorama (question: is Adorama a good place, or should I just patronize the GPCB's establishment?) would I know for certain that a specific lens will work with the D-70? Without having to ask you kind people over and over again!

Doncha love ignorant questions?

I've already absorbed the info from my puh-revious question about the Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 versus 85mm f/1.4, and if I can afford it, I'll get the f/1.4. But probably can't, thus the f/1.8 at one third the price.

This has to do with knowing instantly whether or not it fits and thus goes on my wish/daydream list.

For example, this lens: a Nikon 50mm f/1.2 Nikkor Ai-S Manual Focus Lens
Would that fit a D-70?
(I'm a 99% Gaussianed-out background freak.)

Thank you very much in advance for the scholarly dissertation on Nikon lenses and adapter ring (is that even the right term?) history and mannyfracture.

You can check out this link for some detailed information.

http://www.nikonians.org/html/resour...atibility.html

I'm not hip on the specifics of the D70 but it probably has similar compatibility to the N80 or so. I would expect that it will work with any Nikon autofocus lens, in manual or autofocus mode, and in any exposure mode. It will also work with most manual focus lenses but probably won't meter with them so you will have to set the exposure yourself. Nikon is a little funny about this- some of their autofocus bodies (N70, N90, F100, F5) will meter with manual focus lenses but others (N80) won't.

Virtually everything currently or recently made by Nikon will probably work with the D70 so you don't have to worry too much about it. Similarly with third party lenses- the third party companies caught on real fast to what it took to be compatible so they probably are. I would suggest if you have specific questions you could go to Nikonians.org and post questions there.

You asked about an AI lens- it will work with the D70 but you'll have to focus and probably set exposure yourself.
