Well I got cheap Vivitar 285HV on my D100.
I actually like that flash, especially it's power.
I'm planning on getting sb800dx in near future.
But for now I need a slave thing that I can put
on camera while I would have flash mounted
on some stand bouncing in the wall.

So yeah, could you recommend me some slaves that
would work good with my Vivitar and some stands...
considering maybe adding sb800dx to the party
later and using it on different stand.

Thank you!

you use the 283 to trigger the wein slave on the 285.... or put $300 +/- into a pocket wizard kit...

- will it work without 283?
- pocket wizard ... how does it work and what's the difference between receiver/transmiter combo and that one combines both?

Any other alternatives?

The wein pocket wizard set is a reciever sender set. The receiver is a slave unit that plugs into your vivitar 285 via the sync cord. The sender mounts on your camera and sends out a signal that the receiver picks up to fire your flash. If you decide to add other flash units later on you can buy additional receiver units from wein.

If you're looking for cheap and effective, just buy a simple $15 optical slave for your Vivitar. All my optical slaves have hotshoe mounts that the flash units fit into and they fit in the holders I have on my light stands. YOu could mount your Vivitar (with slave) on a light stand, bounce it into an umbrella and trigger it with your flash (either the built-in flash or SB80DX). With a little practice, you can even use multiple optical flash slaves.

Shot below of Sandra was made with a Nikon D100, Nikon SB80DX and a Sunpack 4000 mounted on a light stands with an $15 optical slave and $20 umbrella.
