I have a fine art nude image that I'd like to enter in a local competition. Except they require slides and the image is a tiff. Now, there are some twenty-year-old machines out there, film recorders, which don't totally destroy the image, but is there anything better??? Thnaks for any assistance,

Lynn

You have two choices. First, there are a number of labs on-line and probably locally that should be able to convert a digital file to a 35mm slide. It's not cheap -- something like $8 a slide? And you have to be careful -- some of the labs have this old box that was used to convert Powerpoint presentations to 35mm slides and they're not good enough for your fine art image. The local lab I use sold their nice machine off a couple of years ago -- there's so little demand.

Your other option is to do what I do -- print the image and photograph it yourself. I usually print something like a 6x9 on an 8.5 x 11 sheet. I print about 12 - 18 images for entry and shoot 2 or 3 slides each. It's real cheap -- $5 for film and $6 for developing.

Best of luck
Bob

This image got into the Texas National Show a couple of years ago through the shoot-the-print process:

What you want is called an "LVT". I haven't had one made in years, but if you call any local pro lab and ask for it, you'll be speaking the right languge. If they don't do them, try one of these top pro labs in NY http://www.duggal.com/ and LA http://www.aandi.com/. As RJ pointed out, it won't be cheap, and for competition purposes you might be better off doing copy shots yourself. Just be sure to use a soft, even light source at 45 degree angles to the axis of the camera lens, with slide film matched to the color temperature of the film (sorry, no WB here). I would suggest bracketting so you can just run the film without snipping it (something else digital guys don't do).

Sounds like an "alternative lifestyle" to me. I've seen a tranny in a tif, but never seen anyone make a tranny from a tiff.

Imagers in Atlanta does exactly what you want.

Check out http://www.imagers.com

I think the first original is $4.95 from a digital file and is output on a 4000 lpi machine.

The compnay I use for converting digital files directly to slides is called Gamma Tech and they are in Albuquerque. I believe they charge $4-5 for the first slide and $1 or so for each additional one. I use their slides for contests all the time. The can be found at:

http://www.gammatech.com/html/home.htm

You upload the files directly on their website and they send you the slides in a few days. They all keep the files around for a few months in case you happen to want more.

hope this helps

Good ideas, thank you. I'm going to try one with a commercial service, and one printed out and shot through my MicroNikkor myself.
