I recently picked up a 1000 Watt inverter at Costco for $70.00

I haven't had a chance to hook everything up yet, but the plan is to mount it in a small ice chest on wheels with a car battery inside.

Wal Mart has a great battery charger for $15.00 that will go into this equation. I'll keep you posted.

I'm no expert here, but I believe you'll need a deep discharge battery vs. the standard starting battery. Deep discharge will allow you to run the battery all the way down without harming it. Also note that you'll want adequate ventilation during recharging.

Having sold Optima batteries for eight years during the course of my Real Job, I can say without question and with full conviction that they are the best batteries made for the money. They cycle quickly and fully, with no "memory effect."

The only Optima battery that I have seen come back through my store was one that had been dangled by its cables and drug down a logging road for 25 miles.

You can mount Optimas sideways, lengthways, upside down. They don't spill. I've even seen one that had been bolted through, and still worked.

I suspect that the only thing that can kill an Optima is a drop from the top of the Sears Tower.

Hold on to your hat...

I sell Red top Optimas (the "standard" automotive model) for $145, and the Blue top (deep cycle/marine) for $178 (here in Oregon). I haven't yet sold a Yellow top.

How close is that to a store-bought power pack, once you get all the other goodies?

In this case the deep cycle or RV battery is not needed. As soon as the battery drops below 11.5 or 12 volts with the inverter running it is going to shut itself off anyway. I run one of them in my motorhome to charge my camera and laptop batteries.
