Okay, so I'm going digi, and I want to utilize most of my equipment from my N80s. I know the D70 body is based on the N80, so the controls will be familiar, but what about my flash unit? I have a Sunpak PZ5000 that has been perfect with the N80. Is it compatible with the D70, too??

No, not in the auto or TTL mode. You now have a very nice manual flash for your D70. I am using a hot shoe (missing PC connection) to mount my (none SB600 or SB800) flash to a Stroboframe bracket. The SB800 looks to be a remarkable flash and I plan to get one soon. But at 350 bucks it won’t be today.

There are warnings about mounting third party flashes to your D70 so check around before using it directly on your camera.

Greetings! Ed, I'm not familiar with the Sunpak and to my knowledge and from what I've read in various forums and magazine articles, Nikon's SB800 & SB600 are the only flash units that will fully work with all of the various flash functions on the D70 and D2H. I bit the bullet and got the SB800 because the SB600 wasn't available yet. If you need the additional GN and unique flash capabilities of the SB800, buy it! However, IF you're only using the flash as FILL ON OCCASSION, save a few dollars by getting the SB600.
Shot w/ SB800 in Command manual mode @ 1/4 power. Another plus with this image is after I had metered via Gossen Luna Pro SBC incident, I stopped down to f/11 and played w/ the power output until I liked what I saw in the LCD. This photo is a straight jpg file simultaneously shot in RAW.
