Hi all,

I just got my new D70. I'm new to digital photography but that's a horse of a different color. What I'm wondering is what idiosyncrocies have you D70 owners found that I could learn from and be prepared for and even perhaps a way to overcome if need be? Tomorrow if all goes well, I'll be out for my first shoot with it. I just hope that I can get the software that came with the camera to work on my Linux box. I don't use Microshaft Windoze.

Happy shooting and thanks.

Good day!

Mike

Hi Mike, I don't know if you already read the dp review yet, but it is very indepth. I have a DRebel, and this review compares the two.
If I had not already bought a Rebel, based on the dpreview I would probably get theD70. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/

A friend of mine uses two D70's to shoot weddings with and hasn't found any quirks yet and is very pleased with the cameras. He switched from a N90 and F100 and hasn't looked back. The best advice I could offer is read the manual and hit the shutter as much as possible. As for DPReview, the D70 forum there is a very good resource.

If you run into anything feel free to contact me and I'll compare notes with my friend or put you two in touch.

Glad to see it made it there I expect nothing but good results from that camera, I had it blessed on its way out of the warehouse

Enjoy

I had shot with the D100 quite awhile and never had to custom white balance in the studio. With the D70 I found that everything has a blueish tint in the studio if I did not custom white balance. I always white balance with a reflector, with flash inside or fill-flash outside everything is fine. Sorry I have nothing else online that was shot with the D-70.

Greetings! Make sure you have Auto ISO in the OFF position in your CSM menus and minimize any of the in-camera sharpening, etc. Shoot in Adobe color space for greater creative control, also. Here's some recent shots I took with the camera. [image]

Got my D-70 from Jason when they first came out and haven't shot film since. I use a digital calibration target by Ed Pierce to WB and check exposure and since I started using the target I nail exposure every time. Have already dropped it once from about 18 inches to dirt and only broke the lens hood which is IMPOSSIBLE to replace at this point. Just ask Jason. By the way the rechargable battery works great but when it starts to die it dies quick. PU a spare.

If your interested in the target

Love the camera

Thanks Michael. I ordered up two batteries with it when I bought it because I have been bitten more than once with my F100 when the batteries died on me. Thankfully, I always have 40 extra pounds worth of AA batteries for the F100 but I must admit that the F100 is very easy on batteries. I'm usually able to shoot a few hundred shots (like a complete wedding) before having to change batteries but I don't like to push it when doing weddings. I am going to keep track of my image count with this first battery and see how it fares.

Thanks for the link too! I added it to my favorites to check out too.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

Lovely images! Thanks for sharing. I'll also make those software changes in my camera as you suggested and play with it some more.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

Good day!

Hi George,

What a precious picture!! Is that you're daughter? She sure is a cutie!

I'll be playing with the white balance with my studio lights too and see how that pans out. This weekend will really be my first attempt at using the D70 with people. There is a huge festival near my house that I always go to and I'm going armed to the teeth with camera equipment and business cards and try to get some business.

I'll be working with a model next week with the new D70 and I'm anxious to see how that works out. I hope I don't completely *$^# it up.

Have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend!

Good day!
