Howdy,
I am looking to pick up a 105mm lens for my kodak. Does anyone have any opinions on either of these lenses? I plan on using it mainly for potrait/glamour work. But the macro capabilities of the one could be useful for playing around.
Nikon Telephoto AF Micro Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D Autofocus Lens
or
Nikon Telephoto AF DC (Defocus Control) Nikkor 105mm f/2.0D Autofocus Lens
Any input is appreciated,
Thanks,
Dan S

I have the 105 Micro Nikkor 2.8 and it's my second favorite lens. My favorite is an 85mm F1.8 AF.

the 105 is incredibly sharp and has excellent contrast.

Hi Dan,
I own the Nikkor AF-105mm/f2.8D.
My favorite lens for portraiture work, razor sharp.

Regards,
Rick

Back in the 80's, Ken Marcus had a video series out that showed us how to shoot glamour....and on one shoot, he used the older version of the 105mm...the MF version....well, if he highly recomends it because of the qualities it has, and because of the point he made about it being the right comfortable working distance between model and photographer......If he spent 60 seconds talking about that lens and why he uses it, I'd say it is worth getting.. Anything from 85mm to 135mm would be great for portraits and glamour. My personal experiences w/ MF105 2.8 macro is that it's too sharp! I have to use Tiffen's SoF/X filter #3 to tone down the sharpness. Your models better have tight skin pores unless you want to magnify the blemishes. Do yourself a favor and get one no matter which lens you get and keep it on the lens. This will save you time in post processing! The DF 105mm(lighter weight lens) is a great lens as well and gives interesting halation effects when you turn the DF ring to its max. rotation. You have to try it to believe the effects! It seems to be more pronounced in the DF 135mm(heavier weight lens). BTW, both DF lenses use 72 mm filters whereas MF105 2.8 macro uses 52 mm filters. Could be a consideration for your lens/filter combinations. Another consideration would be MF 105 1.8 AI-S 62mm filter size.

BTW, these were shot w/ Nikon D70 with the 105 & 135 DF lenses, except the Red Flower w/snail MF 105 macro 2.8. These are the straight jpg files from shooting NEF+JPEG mode Adobe 1998 color space. No in camera sharpening or enhancements. No PS processing.

I have an old fashioned 105mm Nikkor 2.8 manual lens. My favorite lens hands down, if I could only have one. Ken Marcus is right about the comfort distance too. I haven't used mine lately though since I got my Tamron 70-210mm 2,8, but I know its there if I need it.

That you all for the input. I wish there was a standard filter size.

Dan

I have the 105mm 2.8 Micro. Great lens. I call it my "headshot lens." This image of Kristen was shot using the lens.

If you're shooting digital I'd suggest looking at the 85mm f1.4 or if budget is an issue the 85mm f1.8. The 105 is 150mm on a D100 or S2.
