When I bought my camera a few months ago I bought 2 Lexar Pro 40x CF cards which came with a Jumpshot card reader. I had no problems with any of it until I recently picked up a Sandisk card and tried to use it with the Jumpshot. The green light will come on solid but the computer does not find the card. If I put in one of the Lexar cards it finds it right away and starts up the Nikon transfer software. I have tried other Lexar software downloads for the reader but nothing works. Do I have to buy a different reader for each brand of card or are some of them more universal? The Sandisk card does work and I can transfer the images by plugging the camera into the computer but I don't like to do it this way.

Lexar has a history of odd card reading techniques. (For a while there they were making CF that had an extra port that you plugged a direct reader cable into.) According to their website:

http://www.lexarmedia.com/readers/index.html

The Jumpshot reader only works with USB Enabled Lexar cards. Not all Lexar cards are USB Enabled (I have 2 256 Lexar cards that are and one that's not: it makes a difference in the price and the cards are clearly labeled with the "USB Enabled" logo) and the feature is unique to Lexar. I believe it's a proprietary read/write controller that speeds up USB transfer. So, sorry, if you want to use your other cards with a card reader, you'll need a different one.

Pick up another card reader. One of the ones that Office Max gives away after rebate or costs $10 will work fine. Lexar readers only work with Lexar cards.

Don't you hate it when people are so proprietary and won't play well with other children?

Fortunately, a good card reader can be had for less than $20. I have a little Lexar USB reader -- but it's made to read any CF card....

I have a Lexar USB 2.0 card reader that reads 4 different sizes (about $28.00 at Walmart) it reads my Scandisc and PNY CF and Fuji X-D cards just fine.

check out the website ziocorp.com. I have the Dazzle Zio CompactFlash reader/writer (this new company bought out the Dazzle products). It's neat because if you have the front mounted USB ports, you can take off the USB cord and just use the device. When I bought it, it was advertised as the smallest Compact Flash reader. I use Lexar media and have had absolutely zero problems with it.

I am very much drooling on the Lexar Firewire reader...But I don't use Lexar cards...Are you using (or have you used) non-Lexar cards with it (sucessfully)???

I haven't been able to find very much documentation on the web about its particulars, and the only real info I've read about it is Rolando's review..But of course, he only uses Lexar...
