Anyone have tips/techniques/suggestions for shooting with a wide angle lens?

Why I ask:

- I rarely get to use my expensive 17-40L
- I want to explore incorporating more background/negative space into my work
- One particular shot I took distorted the length of a model's legs
- I've heard the rule is you shouldn't shoot people with a WA and rules are meant to be broken

But I can share you this image I took with my Tokina 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 I'm not sure if this lens considered as true wide angle lens.

Jeff

I shoot people with a WA all the time! You have to be careful that you don't distort the image.

Here's one where I'm up in the corner of the room and you can see the distortion in the image. However, for this image that was fine:

Here's one where I was just using the lens to create lots of space. However, I made sure that I had the lens parallel to the ground and moved the camera up and down rather than tilting the lens. It's tilting the lens that causes the distortion.

Here are a couple of commercial shots where I did the same thing:

Camera tilt for effect:

Camera level to create space:

Seriously? Look at the upper corners of the image where the straight lines curve into the corners. And the model is shortened a bit. (Tall model)

Well, the model thing I wouldn't have known unless you told. But I do see the distortion on the edges now. Maybe the B&W kept me from seeing it before. I tell you, I can't help but look at that image and be drawn to the line from her chin down her chest. Maybe that's another reason I couldn't see the distortion earlier, I was distracted.

Thanks for pointing it out to me. Sorry I looked like such a boob

Not quite epic wide angle focal length, but a nice shot from my old POS Phoenix 19-35 lens

Change your perspective......like shoot low to the ground.... and buy a right angle finder so you won't get a sore neck..... and hold your camera right on the ground and look around........it's a trippy view!

Yes, WA lenses distort things closer to the edge...and when you don't hold them strait on the subject....yep, that happens... have fun with that...it can be cool looking too..

All rules will be broken eventually...

Here's one I took with my 24mm..
