I'll be doing a shoot with a model who wants
to do artistic nude. What do I need to do this kind of shoot?
Do you use only one light (strobe) on one side
and leave the other side in the shadow?
I have one one strobe and 3 hot lights. And use faster speed
film, right? I've been looking for a book on this
subject but no luck. Can any of you photographer can give me some tips on this subject?
Also I'd like to see a example of artistic nude.
Thank and have a great Happy Holidays!

If the model is the one requesting to do artistic nudes, perhaps you can ask her to give you examples of what kinds of images she has in mind. This should result in fewer surprises and misunderstandings at the actual shoot.

"Artistic nude" is defined by the photographer and, to an extent, the model. There is no clear definition of what kind of equipment you need to shoot art nudes.

Take a look at some art nude shooters - such as Doug Lester (www.distinctiveimages.com) and even me (www.eselby.com) and you will see that what is "artistic" varies from shooter to shooter.

dont shoot yourself into a corner. I have seen some very good nudes done with only a flashlight (using the painting with light technique) and 100 speed kodak royal gold. From my experience, try shooting with hot lights first. Learn where and how the light falls and what it takes to manage your light, ie barn doors, gels, bulbs. This my friend will teach you more than any of us can. Once you have good understanding of how light actually falls, then you can use your strobes more effectively

Melvin
This picture has been done with one strobe and a reflector.
You can definitely start with one stobe only. That's enough to gain experience.

...you can use whatever you want...be creative.

This photo was taken using only natural backlight, using a scrim, with light coming in from a large window.

Good luck, and have some fun!!!

Melvin -

As you can see in several of the responses, "artistic nude" is frequently used to describe what might also be called "figure studies." The lighting is up to you and I'm sure you can handle it, having seen your site.

However, it occurs to me that the model may be using the term in a somewhat different sense. I've seen some models use that to describe their comfort limit in posing - "artistic nude" being nude, but not explicit with respect to genitalia. (For example, Doug Lester's work, while sometimes highly sexual, never - insofar as I recall - shows the model's genitalia explicitedly.) She may not actually have a particular photo in mind, but is simply setting her limits.

I suggest - as did someone else - that you talk with her further about what she wants to achieve. Enjoy.

Season's greetings.

John
