Personal opinions only here.

Number 2 is too much of the shot is out-of-focus. Perhaps if you had panned "with" the car a little more.... Or set exposure for a little longer and had camera in fixed position, where background was in focus, it would have been a little more dynamic. As is, you get the "basic" feel of motion and speed, but too much is lost in OOF detail.

Thanks! Yep, when the direction of motion isn't perpendicular to the camera, you generally only get a small region of the image that's sharp with a pan shot since there's rotation relative to the "film" plane. It's especially noticeable, obviously, with a slow shutter speed. I was having fun with that, combined with slow-sync flash. I agree that it's not to everyone's taste.
