Great Photos! I have done a lot of sports photography, and catching that defining moment is the trick. You have achieved it very well!

I am assuming that many of these were micro-bursts of the shutter, or are you just that good...?

Ohh, there's a loaded question ... lol

A little of both I guess (which hopefully doesn't come across as overly egotistical). The key on all of the images was anticipating where the peak action would fall and shooting just before that moment fully developed mainly.

On an image-by-image tally, it fell this way ...

Boxing shots -- single frames (no motor drive) with a Canon F1
1st soccer shot -- semi-single frame ... done with a Minolta Maxxum 9xi (but with a broken drive that would mainly just advance the film ... maybe 1 fps or so). Used it that way for about three years and enjoyed the challenge using it ... lol
Baseball play at 3rd base -- motor drive on Nikon 8008 (burst of about 4 frames at 3 fps)
Team USA vs. Cuba batter -- semi-single frame ... 9xi again.
2nd soccer shot -- motor drive on Nikon 8008 during a driving rain (ISO 3200 and exposure of 1/250th at f/2.8... 3 shot burst)
Diver -- semi-single frame ... 9xi again (but had 3 dives she did to work to get best image from).
Baseball plate collision -- 9xi again ... BUT ... before the drive broke and burned off like 20-22 frames as play ran through! This one was the 3rd frame and continued until players finished tumbling to backstop).
Football -- pretty sure it was with the Nikon 8008 and about a 4 frame burst.
Basketball -- with Nikon 8008 which has a motor drive but shoot single frame since using the White Lightnings we had installed at arena (3 sec recycling time before another shot can get full flash output).
Water Skiier -- not sure but probably the 9xi with the broken drive (although the beauty of shooting that is the subject never gets further from the lens than the pull rope ... lol)

Four of the images took first place in annual Tennessee photojournalism competitions, the second soccer image placing the highest among those since it was selected as the top sports action image in open competition that year. Me, I'm partial to the diving one.

Thanks for the kind words ... very much appreciated!

Dave

Very nice. I'm assuming that the batter is letting the pitch go by in #5 cause he's never going to get around on it.

Yep, plus it's was way high and out of the strike zone.

Thanks Huey!

Very impressive work!

Where were you to get the diver shot? It looks like you were directly above the board.

Thanks, Cat. On the diving shot I was standing on the 10 meter board which IS nearly directly above the 3 meter springboard.
