I like the suggestion saying you should keep the background out of focus. I would go one step beyond and say air brush the couple of the beach, I find them a bit distracting.

Nope... There were done on a 35mm slr, using fujichrome (iso 100) and later cross processed. They are grainy, and that is due to x-processing but later scanning them in makes lose some resolution.
