Re: End of year... some odds and ends

I was afraid you were going to have the model dip her hair in the toilet...

I share that idea only 'cause it got stuck in my head and the only way to get it out was to tell you :)

Re: Model ElaineD

I don't think you need a bigger house - one of my favourite lenses for full length shots is a 35mm f1.4L - that focal length, used carefully, yields good images.

I like the images, and I'm...

Re: Epson 3800

I had a 2400 and an 1800 when I bought the 3800. I hardly use the 2400 and 1800 now (the 1800 prints CDs and DVDs, 'cause the 2400 and 3800 can't).

The 3800 runs a LOT longer on its ink cartridges...

Re: What if you...

Nice shot Dave, but I have two quibbles - there's a teeny bit of barrel distortion, and I can't find the pretty girl in the shot...

Re: Overexposure as an artistic approach

I understand what you are saying, and as a general rule I would agree with you, but it is part of the effect that I like here - the left side of her face (her left, not picture left) is well-defined,...

Overexposure as an artistic approach

I saw an image that another photographer had posted on a modelling site, featuring a model looking almost white on white (that's not a good description!). I wondered how it was done, and did some...

Re: Pack & Heads VS Monolights

On the principle that it's worth mentioning some other brands - I have used Interfit (UK) continuous lighting, and I hear that their strobes are inexpensive; I now have Elinchrom (Swiss), and I like...

Re: Amputation with elements

Good work in PhotoShop, but I'd crop the image just below the bra - that cleans up the arm (cropping above the elbow is fine, below the elbow can be problematic).

Re: RAM allocation and CS3 Performance

Don't bother buying another 1Gb - the max you can use under 32bit Windows is 3Gb.

Re: Cropping

Given that the majority of the cameras we use have zillions of pixels, it doesn't hurt to be a little generous on the margins - crop it down in PhotoShop and reduce the image from 12Mpixel to 10 or...

Re: Example of Canon 1D Mark III at ISO 6400

If you are doing available light photography you should be able to avoid the focus issues - they are mostly reported with bright light and warm temperatures, which are a long way from what I'd call...

Re: An Equation

ISO affects the perceived intensity.

White balance has (pretty much) no influence on exposure.

Nice way to present your question - not sure that I'd have wanted my exam questions presented...

Re: Example of Canon 1D Mark III at ISO 6400

As you can imagine, I intend to conduct some more experiments with ISO 6400. I think it makes available light photography more interesting...

I'm also keenly looking forward to the 1Ds Mark III...

Example of Canon 1D Mark III at ISO 6400

After getting my 1D Mark III, I did what I have done with every new camera body since buying my first SLR in 1986 - I took it to the zoo. Melbourne Zoo has a reptile house; like most reptile houses...

Re: Looking For Information On A Lense

The 24-70 f2.8L is a fine lens, and one I use in the studio a lot of the time. The 28-70 f2.8L is also a fine lens, and the predecessor of the 24-70 - many owners of the 28-70 have seen no need to...

Re: White balance in RAW - necessary ?

That's not how I read it. As I understand DNG, it has the (optional) ability to hold the manufacturer's RAW file, but it also holds the raw data in a standard form. Yes, that makes it twice as big,...

Re: Preview failure in Bridge CS3 for Windows?

Hmm - well, that wasn't my problem, because I didn't even download the beta version. Glad to hear you got your problem solved, though.

I'm glad my only problems with CS3 so far have been...

Re: Fuji S5 color/white balance issue help!!!

I have seen a line like that one when the shutter speed is just a teeny bit too fast for the strobes - try shooting the same shot with the shutter one notch slower (eg: if you had it at 1/160, try...

Re: Monitor resolution discussion ...

Just reconfigured one of my systems - now has a 19" LCD panel in portrait mode on either side, and a 23" LCD panel in the middle. Not perfect, in that the 23" is 1920x1200, and the 19"s are...

Re: Canon 20D to 5D or 1DS

The 1Ds Mark III has not been announced by Canon, but there is rampant speculation about what it will feature. Most of the features on the 1D Mark III are expected (not necessarily two Digic III...

Re: Canon 20D to 5D or 1DS

The 5D can autofocus with lenses which have a maximum aperture of f5.6 or larger. The 1D and 1Ds families can autofocus with lenses which have a maximum aperture of f8 or larger (eg: f6.3).

You...

Re: White balance in RAW - necessary ?

Rolando talked about data being interpolated in the RAW file. I can't comment on formats other than Canon, but I understood the RAW data in a CR2 file to be the sensor data, that is, the...

Re: Print color has too much red???

You get the lab to send you a colour profile for the printer/paper combination you wish to use. You should have one for each printer/paper combination. Then you select this profile when making the...

Re: Beauty dish options for a Hensel Contra 1000?

You may or may not know that Elinchrom make their own beauty dishes - they have two sizes. I have the larger one (72cm, I think) with a white interior. Comes with gold and silver deflectors which...
