I posted some time ago and got some honest criticism. It wasn't nice, but it was honest. I hope I can get the same honest critiques on these two images from a recent shoot with Heather (OMP #85868). I'd like to think they are better. How about you folks?

I like the first one a lot. Composition, facial expression, lighting all works for me. The second one is too flat. A stronger reflection of light back into the model's face would have helped. I do like the composition even though I'm not sure I would have shot it that way, but that's just me.

Wow Mike!!! Thanks for the positive comments on the first one, I am actually very pleased you like it. The idea for that image actually came from a business workshop with Rick Hughes. I hope Rick doesn't mind me trying something I saw him do (very well I might add).

I used a gold relfector on the second and shot with the sun to the model's back. I wanted to slightly over expose so the water seemed a little washed out. Do you think a silver would have given a little more light on her face?

Perhaps silver would have been better and maybe in closer to her. Try working the levels and curves in PS.

That first shot is excellent. It has good lighting, a little flat maybe but good, the pose is excellent as is the composition. I wouldn't recommend changing anything.

But the second image. To be honest, if I die without ever seeing anther tilted horizon and model looking as though she's falling over, that will still have been too many tilted horizons. I would recommend loosing that one. You have a good angular composition in the first shot, but in the second in my view it's horribly artificial looking. Tilting a model in the frame is fine, but I strongly recommend leaving things which are suposed to be horizontal out of the compositon.

Thanks Doug. I appreciate your time and input. I really need to beef up my swimwear stuff. You should see more from me soon enough. Your comments will help me produce better images during my future ventures.

I agree with all the constructive suggestions (too flat) and not the personal prefences(tilt). I would like for you to look at the models right arm. I believe it looks too stiff and would like to be able to see the background between the arm and the torso... slimming her a little. Great job though.

Thanks coach. I kinda thought the tilt was cool too. I see what you mean about the arm. She tended to have a habit of leaning on an arm pretty heavily. I didn't think that in this picture it was so bad. I think it would have slimmed her up some, though.

The first image is okay. A little flat perhaps, but not bad.

I don't like the second images for a variety of reasons, a couple of which have been mentioned. The tilted horizon just doesn't make it for me in this image. Also the exposure on her is not great. Frankly, I don't see the effects of a gold reflector. Increasing the exposure would have burned out some of her hair on the right side, so it's a tough call.

I also think cropping her right hand at the wrist was unfortunate. The position of her right leg is not the best, it looks big and lumpy. But my biggest problem is her expression. Maybe she's sitting on a shell or something, but she just doesn't appear too happy or relaxed. Of course, these are all just my opinions and what do I know...
