I'm new here and new to photography, so I figured I would post a couple of photos I recently took of my wife, so I can get some advice on what I need to do to improve my skills. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated!

This one was obviously Photoshopped...

Welcome to GG! I like the feel you were going for in #1. I get that you want it to be very sensual and alluring. The problem I see with it is her hand placement looks like she is about to choke herself. Her hand needs to be relaxed more. Also a little light behind her, pointing toward her would get rid of that shadow and give her a little light in her hair, and on her neck and shoulder.

In #2 I can appreciate also the effect you were going for. Your wife is beautiful and obviously works out. I like the superman gear on her, BUT I would have put her in a gym setting. As it is, on satin sheets, the two ideas clash. She looks strong and tough, and that goes along with the superman clothing. The sheets indicate soft and sweet, or maybe sensual or sexual. She's a gorgeous woman and would make a wonderful fitness model. I would also turn her slightly from the camera, instead of shooting her straight on, to emphasize her form.

Since you're new to photography, she is probably new to modeling too and can learn to show one emotion vs. another via facial expressions as you two work together.

Good job! Thanks for sharing, and I look forward to seeing more from you!

P.S. For some reason, GG isn't allowing me to post from my portfolio AND my website seems to be giving me fits. For the obligitory image, check out any of my posts. LOL Sorry bout that!

I'm no expert, so....

I just want to say that Barb gave really great advice!

My only addition would be that the images are a bit too "noir" for my liking

in this post
Bob Warren gives good advice that I found helpful.

Your images are fine -- they just lack snap. Lots of folks are afraid to blow out the highlights or get too dark -- but black and white needs.... well, BLACK and WHITE, not grey.

Keep em coming..

I really like the pose and approach of the first shot.

I don't care for the second shot. I guess that is because the outfit and pose don't really go together with the bed and setting. The model also looks to "stiff" for me in this pose.

Welcome to Garage Glamour. You're about to meet some mighty fine people here--all with opinions.

#1 Since you asked for it, I've got a nit pick here in addition to the tips Barb and the others pointed out. The clasp to her neclace is a distraction that's often overlooked by many models and photographers. Keep an eye out for them because they appear when you least expect it.

#2. Try desaturating the outfit to a point that it becomes part of the image instead of the main focus. By all means keep the colors, but tone them down a bit. Even blondes need to be seperated from the background so yoiu might try rim lighting her from back/side or use a hair light at a minimum.

Okay. I went easy on you, but others may not. Welcome to Garage Glamour!!!

Rick D.
