Well, after a lengthy hiatus from having my camera in hand I got an opportunity today to photograph a young lady and I think she and I did pretty well. I am still going through the photos but this one in particular caught my eye.

What do the rest of you think? C & C welcome. Thanks.

Dave, great to see you posting!

Might be my monitor - is it a little undersaturated? I'll calibrate and look again.

Brian, the image may be a little undersaturated. We were shooting at 7:00 AM to try and beat the heat and the low angle of the sun was playing havoc with where I could stand to shoot. I was even using my hand as an extension of the lens hood and it worked well with some images and not so well with others.

Thanks for your comment. I was starting to worry if I was the only one left alive here or perhaps I had shifted out of phase with the rest of the universe. 130 views and not a single comment until yours.

I prefer complete shade when shooting outdoors. Sometimes it is difficult to find a location. In this case I believe the light (bright) area at the top is a distraction, because it pulls my eyes up and away from the girl.

Her head is turned very far and her eyes are cut even farther in the same direction, which does not seem to flatter her facial structure.

There are some very nice highlights on her shoulders and hair, but perhaps a bit strong on her arm and hip.

There are times when not everything can be just as I would like it, but I will sacrifice highlights on the shoulders for soft lighting in complete shade. I never have found it convenient to use reflectors, so I try to watch the light so it might range from flat to a little contrast on the face and figure.

+1

However, I would have tried to shoot (the original posted shot) with the light coming through a diffuser. It would soften the light a bit and even out the highlights.

It's very difficult to second guess though...... I don't know the shooting situation. Light position, other obstructions, etc.
