Last week I had my first ever studio session giving me an opportunity to use professional studio lighting for the first time. I have worked with a model on a couple of occasions previously but always relied on my flash gun and pop-up.

Below is an image from this studio session and I'm reasonably pleased with the results. There has been very little post-processing, just a small amount of work to smooth the model's skin. The exposure, colour, etc. are straight from the camera (a Sony A200 with 50mm prime lens.)

The model's hair is being blown around by a huge fan. This did cause a few problems and wispy hairs which I haven't yet removed.

Any feedback you guys can give me would be gratefully received.

Model: Jen from Birmingham (UK)

Thanks,
Fletch

As you noted, the hair is a mess, but this may have been the look you were after. The hiar light seems a little hot. Other then that not too bad. I'm not sure I like whatever that is showing through her shirt.

I like the hair light, it adds a nice touch to the image but on my un-calibrated monitor the image looks a little underexposed.

Also, the hair that dropped into the models face is a major distraction. You should always be on the lookout for these types of snafus (hair in the wrong place(s), bra strap showing, clothes pulling, etc) and when they happen correct them before you push the shutter button. Generally if you have a model already posed you, or an assistant if you are working with one, should make the adjustments but ask the model first before touching her.

Here is a similar photo for comparison. Keep working at it and don't hesitate to ask for help.

Thanks for the feedback guys, very constructive. I probably do need to look out for the faux pas before pressing the shutter button.

I think that you did a good job!

I will cast my vote with the hair light being a little too hot, and the single strand of hair across her left eye being a distraction. I actually like the main stand of hair across her nose, but it would have worked either way for me, present or not present.

And the stipes in her shirt, or through her shirt, take away from the shot only because they are so light that they don't look obvious and therefore they look out of place.

But for being your first studio shot, I think that you did great!

Thanks Zipper, glad you like it. I'm reasonably proud with the results considering my very limited experience but I do take on board the other guys comments. It's great to get a range of views from different people.

Here's another image from the same session. I wasn't so keen on this one, the model has a nice "urban" look but the background/wall is very artificial.

Hope the exposure looks okay on everyone's monitors. It looks fine on mine with a good balance between light and shadows...but I am sitting here in a darkish room!

I think this one looks pretty good too. Now if the wall had some grafiti on it, it would have more of an urban feel to it.
