but honest! How am I doing? Are my colors too cool? I took this of a friend and I really kinda like the image, but I would like an unbiased, and experienced opinion. I have only been seriously shooting for about six months.

I like the shot. The color is great. Her skin is beautiful and her hair is nicely separated from the background.

The colors look good to me, and you kept detail in the whites, and texture in the hair. As mentioned, good separation, too. I wonder why so much open space around the subject? I could easily see taking some off the top and the (viewer's) left side.
I'm not clear whether you were going for a glamour shot or an intimate portrait. And my not being clear could mean that you didn't communicate that clearly enough.
But you've clearly got a good handle on all the technical issues.
Thanks for sharing, and please remember my opinion is just that - my opinion.

Hi Rose

You have a beautiful model to work with. Overall, I like the image you made. The only thing I would do different is to use the light to shift the emphasis more to her face. Rather than just tell you what I would do, I have done a quick and rough edit to your image (hopefully you don't mind). I did three minor edits:

I brightened the eyes just a bit.
I lightened the face some.
I did a light vignette to knock down the brightness of the white shirt since the brightest part of an image tends to draw the eyes and your model's face is too nice to not be the focus.

Keep up the good work.

David

Thank you for the encouragement and the pointers!

I shall looked into a tighter crop, and see how it makes a difference. As far as "glamour vs. intimate", I think my intent was intimate. Perhaps I have not thought that through enough! Could you point me in the direction of resources showing me how achieve a more intimate look?

David, thank you for the edit. I can see the difference, and it looks much better. One of the other things that I wondered about with this image was that there was not much of a catch light in her eyes, but by brightening her eyes, it made it not so much an issue.

Thanks again! I appreciate learning from others' experience.

When I have an image like yours that doesn't have much of a catchlight, I usually add one in photoshop. I didn't do it in this case since I was just doing a quick edit to show you the concept. A catchlight would definitely brighten up the eyes a bit more than just brightening the whites.

Good work on the image.

David
