Here is my first real attempt at using my ABR800. I got a flash, my wife got new Victoria's Secret. Win/Win!

Beautiful lady and I think number two has the most promise. A better background would help immensely. The first shot is okay (except for the background), but her arms are just hanging there.

Thanks for the tips. I agree abut the Background. I am trying to use my surroundings instead of solid BG or Canvas, been doing that and trying to get away from it. But in this case, it might have helped.
After shooting, I noticed that shooting at the angle kind of minimized the effect of shooting with the ring flash. The halo is more defined on one side and less on the other. I did also see what everyone said would happen, it really pronounced any skin flaws so I had to be careful with that as well. I think next time I will experiment with either a solid background perpendicular to the camera plane or more distance from BG to flash and subject if in a location setting.
It is a trick piece of gear to get used to, especially since it is all so new to me. But when it happens right, wow!

For starters pay attention to your composition and what you're cropping and where you're cropping it.

buy magazines. clip out pictures. copy them.

I know, we all get excited with new toys...

Now, with a live in subject such as you have, your learning curve should be fast and fun.

Here's the best advise I can give you, and I promise you, if you follow it, you be jammin' in a few months. Get a big stack of magazines and go over the images with your wife. Tear out shots you both like, but make sure SHE really likes them. Work on recreating them, every little bit, even if it takes a few tries. You can post the original here and we can help hip you to the lighting plan.

You'll both have fun, she'll feel sexy as hell and you'll start making great pictures.

You did really well for the first attempt, and I agree that it's great to have a beautiful live-in model to practice with.
I've had my ring for several months and am very happy with it, except for the mounting bracket. I got a Vagabond too and find that the combination makes a great traveling set up.
There are many ways to use it besides having the model close to the background for that shadow. I used it as main light , with sunlight coming in as a rim hair light in the window shot, and as the main light in a very dark abandoned stable. Meter the camera to use the ambiant light behind her and adjust the flash for as much light as you need for the effect you are looking for.

I will do that! Originally, thats what we did and I, well, WE learned a lot. I would love to get your feedback as we go along. In te past, I had been to the Paramour website ad learned a lot watching the videos on how you shoot. I really appreciate feedback from someone with your experience.
