Hey guys,

Here's another portrait I shot a few days ago. Not large format like the last one, though (I shot a few LF, but wasn't as happy with how those turned out)...

Here's the stats: Contax 645, 120mm lens, f4.0 @ 1/30, on Tri-X film (rated at 100 and pulled one stop). Light was one hotlight with a shoot-through umbrella. It was scanned from the contact sheet, dust spots left, and motion blur added to soften it up a bit. I know, sounds totally weird, but I added the motion blur. I'm experimenting with the fact that images of other people's work I've seen who had motion blur in them actually looked kinda cool, so I wanted to try it out for myself. That's why I used a hotlight and a slow (for handheld) shutter speed. Her eyes still turned out sharp (I know, tragic! ), which is why I added the blur in later.

Check out this guy's work and you'll see why I wanted to try this out...

Anyways, lemme know what you think, or if it just looks like a mistake, or what, lol. Thanks!

Very nice, but (and you knew it was coming) it reminds me of when I spilled some fix in the developer tray. I mean, I like the toning and the softness, but the contrast seems lacking. For example, the shiny spot on her forehead is your "white" - but it isn't. OTOH, I love the pose, styling, darkness and mood you created. Maybe contrast isn't a good thing here. Not sure.
Overexposed and pulled Tri-X, eh?
Thanks for sharing.
(What are you using to scan? From negative or print?)

LOL I knew you were gonna say something about it John, haha. Yep, there's no absolute black or white here. I've tried it with a more normal contrast, but I dunno, just didn't seem to go with the image for some reason to me. The idea was to give it an old, worn look at the time. Been really interested in "imperfect" images, lately. But if you want I can post another version of it later on to compare.

Oops, correction, I did shoot Tri-X that day, but this was actually on HP5. Still overexposed and pulled. When I was heavy into the zone system, almost all my E.I.s were slower than the film's given ISO, and almost all the Normal development times were less than what the manufacturers recommended, so now, since I just don't have the time to process the film myself, is to overexpose the film and have my lab pull the film for me. Trying to keep detail in as much of the neg as I can, then play with contrast later.

For this one I scanned from a contact sheet to give it a bit of a soft look, but I've got a film scanner here, too. The flatbed's an Epson I've had forever, a Perfection 2450. The film scanner's a Nikon SuperCoolscan 9000 ED.

Thanks for commenting John, much appreciated!
