I am relativity new to people photography ( about 3 months into it ), and I have been working on my headshots and portrait technique. I would be interested in some constructive critique of a couple of images that I have done recently.

Are these any good?

1) Karolina - "Cover Girl"
shot outside in shade, 250mm, f5.6, iso 100

2) Jessica - "Morning Coffee"
shot inside (obviously ) key f8, highlight f6, window f5.6
33mm, f8, 1/125, iso 100

Thanks in advance
Doug

Doug, the first thing I'd say is if your playing around working on technique no problem but if your shooting anything for portfolio or promo dont even consider shooting without a professional makeup artist.

The first shot is cute but this one screams need a makeup artist, if I was going to pick anything to change I'd lose the bracelet its a little distracting with such a close up image.

The second shoot I love the foreground its really quirker which is my thing, whats she thinking about why is she staring at that coffee cup. The things I'd pick up on is the background has a lot of distracting elements especially as there so bright. My eye is all over the place. Then fine details to pay attention to I'm assuming she had her up and now the hair bands are wrapped around her right arm, also that crease in the left sleeve bothers me.

For me its a lot harder to be creative than it is to be technically correct, so I think thats why I like the second one more. What you might want to do in the future is time willing shoot an few images load them straight up on your laptop and then look at them yourself, think about whats right and wrong what you would change and then go straight back and reshoot it. Its so much easier to see what you missed once your looking at the images that night and the model is home in bed. Thats why I like to shot tethered every so often.

The biggest thing I'd say to anyone starting to shoot is to bring your own style to what you shoot, I hate looking at stuff that absolutely anyone could have shot. Whats the point of you doing it then. Think about a painter could a painter be successful if they painted in the same style as everyone else?
