It's a nice image but it looks out of focus to me.

What you want to focus on here is the face of the model. Compositionaly speaking none of the natural lines in the photograph draw attention to her face. For example, look at the line formed by her lower leg. It draws your eyes to her knee, which is not what you want to do.

The image is definitely soft and there are distractions in the photo that take away from what should be the main focus of the image, the model's face. When working with models you should always focus on their eyes.

Can you give us more information on what equipment you are using (camera and lens) and the settings for this image. Also were you shooting in JPEG or RAW?

A lot of times a soft image can be punched up in PhotoShop using the UnSharp Mask tool.

Here is an example of a photo I took that pretty much adheres to the "rules" for good portraiture. Enjoy

I was shooting with a Minolta 7D in RAW. Camera settings: 1/125 @ f4 Lens Sigma 28-105mm f2.8-4. Post work done using Picasa (until I can get to my home computer).

Thanks for you valued input David.

Bryant:

I think part of the problem is the lens. I owned and used that lens at one time and is a bit soft. For that lens try to never open up past F8.0 or at the most F5.6. That will give you a little more sharpness in the camera.

I don't know a lot about Minolta lenses but I use the Tamron 28-78 F2.8 XRDI lens and I can't say enough good things about it and I think it is available for the Minoltas. It goes for approx. $299.00 new and you can find it used for approx. $250.00. The photo I posted in your thread was taken with the Tamron lens so you might want to give it some thought.

Keep practicing and feel free to post more images here for C & C. You'll get there. Good luck.
