Hey everybody,

Okay, I FINALLY shot something new today. It was for a comp card. I wish I could take the credit for these, 'cause I kinda like 'em (but y'all let me know what you think, good or bad!!), but the idea to shoot in my bathroom window sill was all her.

Okay, for those of you who know, I know when you're shooting for a comp card it's really supposed to sell the model, so you wanna be able to see her clearly, etc. Well anyways, do these work okay for a comp?

Thanks a bunch!

Sam

P.S.: Also, I just have to say this. These were shot with a D3, and at 6400 ISO, even though I've had this camera for a while, it still just blows me away.

I don't know anything about Comp Cards, but I definitely like your results.

Could you share your other settings? It appears you have full sun coming through the window, and I wonder why you had to shoot at iso 6400 ?

Thanks Vic! These were shot at f4 @ 1/80, focal length set to 50mm (white balance was tungsten to make them blue). Exposure-wise, these are identical to how they came out of the camera. The room was actually quite dark, as the only source of light was the small window she was sitting in. I didn't wanna have to use a tripod, 'cause I was on an extremely tight schedule yesterday, and plus I didn't want to chance her blurring from moving slightly in a slow shutter speed. Also, I could've shot at f2.8 if I had used ISO 3200, but I've had bad luck with shooting wide open like that in the past when working quickly with people (the eyes would end up out of focus ).

IMO, the second is really good. The first suffers from the cropped hem and foot.
Not a professional, but I don't think either is really quite what you'd want on a comp card - the first sells her better, but has the compositional issues - yours, not hers, though. I suppose it'd be OK for her, but not such great an advertisement for you.
Good to see your stuff. Sorry to learn times are so tough your bathroom has become your studio. Good work therein, nonetheless.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the comments John! I see what you're saying about the crop in the first one. I've got some similar ones that might work better. I was trying this lighting -- I knew I wanted to try something lit this way, just hadn't occured to me to use the bathroom window for it, lol -- 'cause I had seen a similarly lit image in a model's portfolio on an agency website. Although, then again, that's a portfolio, not a comp card, like I was trying to shoot for.

LOL, yeah, my apartment's so small, that the more junk I accumlate, the less space I have to shoot, so now I have to cram 'em in the bathroom window, LMAO.

Thanks John.

Beautiful model! She has a fashion look about her (looks like she's kinda tall, too). I can see her in fashion-style shots, a little sophisticated. If she was here in San Antonio, I'd definitely set up something like that. She also has a face that looks good with either short or long hair.

Nice work, the cool color looks good! =)

Best,
Alan

Yep she's great, we've shot together a few times before. And funny you mention about her look, she's actually with an agency in Miami. And yep, she's about as tall as I am (I'm 5'11"). And it's also ironic you mention about the short or long hair, too, as she's been wanting to grow her hair back out, and we shot a few images of her with a long wig on a few weeks back, just for fun.

Thanks!

Sam
