Got the new Nikon D300 over Thanksgiving and just found the time to do some model shoots. Man ... there are a lot of buttons, dials and settings to learn. Here's my first attempt at shooting outdoors with a strong backlight.

Nikon D300 • 70-200 f2.8 @ 150mm • SB-80 on camera flash for fill light

Nice shot and your use of fill flash isn't overdone.

Well, I own the new Nikon D300 too . . . but my photos don't look nearly as gorgeous as yours. Hmmmmm, I wonder if it could be my subject material.

And you're right about the buttons, buttons, buttons. I was shooting a cycle-cross competition last weekend with it and it got into the exposure bracketing mode and for the life of me I couldn't get it out of it. I had to wait till I got back home to look up in the manual how to disable it.

But back to your shot. I think that you did a really nice job and she is a very sexy model. What is that blurry thing though at the top center of the photo?

Thanks,
PTL,
Lee

I got mine at Competitive Camera in Dallas. As for how I like it ... hummm, I like about 90% of what I've played with so far. To get as competent with the D300 as I was with my D100 will definitely take a lot longer (there are a lot more buttons, dials and settings to learn). Those of you moving up from the D200 might have a faster learning curve. I LOVE the 3" LCD, but I HATE that I can't find a way to turn off the data display, so even in the minimal settings, it still displays all the camera settings. I'd prefer to see just the image, full screen.

Here are a few more from my first shoots.

Thanks Marty ..... beautiful model you're working with there, but that's nothing new.
I'm moving from a Fujifilm S3 to the D300, so I'm sure it will be interesting. I'm lining up some shoots just to get used to using the camera .....
Thanks for your reply, one and all!

Mitch

No Problem, It's a smaller store but at least you may beat the tax because they are shipping out of state and they know High End Digital Cameras...
Have fun I will have to wait a few months before I upgrade so send in your new pictures.

Here is a link to the manual:

http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/...en_noprint.pdf

I think page 250-253 may be the answer to what gets displayed on the LCD.

Cheers,
rfs
