Hello. This is my very first posting here on G1. I just joined tonight actually. These are some pics from my very first photoshoot a week and a half ago. I want to improve my technique, so please be honest. Gentle...lol...but honest.

I am going to have to say for me the 1st picture is the best of the set. The setting and the clothing choices just don't do much for me. So the close up works well.

Thank you! The model chose her outfit for the shooting. We were originally just going to do some test shots...but it turned into more of a real "shoot". Thanks again. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Nice model, but I agree with gr8shotz00 on the outfit. Aside from that the poses look good in all shots especially the last one. If she had an outfit that worked better it would be smashing!

There's too much going on in the last three images for them to be really effective. You need a longer lens and shallower depth of field to keep the surroundings from competing with your subject. The reason your first image works is that you've eliminated the surroundings (by composition and blurring out the background) so that the viewer's attention is drawn to the model. Photography, unlike most other artistic mediums, is an art of subtraction. Eliminate any and all elements that don't strengthen the image.

Images 2 and 4 have way too much going on in them and it's impossible to be drawn to the model. Image 3 would more than likely work if you had used a 300mm or 400mm lens and shot wide open to eliminate the background. Her pose and expression are the best of the bunch though.

Image #1 is pretty successful, but you need to watch for details like how she holds her hand and fingers. The hand's a little strange-looking but otherwise the image works for me.

As I looked at the thread, Chip pretty much said what i was going to say...so I'll add one thing -- her skin tone changes to my eye. In 3 & 4 she looks a bit more yellow than in the first.

Wow...thank you all for your critiques!! I'm just learning a lot of this...especially with this being from my first shoot. I know I need to get more/better equipment (longer lenses, etc), so I'll get there when I can afford it. Hopefully that will be soon! I will definitely work more on controlling/eliminating distracting backgrounds. Thanks!!

#1 I like second best, agree about the hand.
#2 She looks like she's sitting on a rock. Don't like anything about the pose.
#3 This one I like best, background could be softer but her pose is the best.
#4 I like this one except you didn't notice her dress was inside out, where she was holding it up. distracting to me.

Edit: forgot the image..

heyhey and congrats on your first shoot

Critique - there has been some very good observations and suggestions on your shoot... but the thing that I noticed the most was that the lighting is very flat and muted throughout the series. I always like to see a little more contrast and a little more warmth (depending on the look u r going for).

watch where the sun is when u shoot and take advantage of it position.

try using a couple of reflectors to add highlights. #1 is a good example. This would have been nicer with a rim light on her hair and a little hightlight in her eyes.

other than that - just shoot a lot, and PLAY with lighting, angles, composition, camera settings, filters, etc... But most of all - just have fun
