I have a few shots of Michelle in my portfolio. This one seems to get the most attention and both the model and the MUA love it. I'm kind of indifferent. It's definitely not my favorite among those I shot of her although it does show her killer blue eyes. Am I right? Wrong? What do you think?

It's a nice shot. You nailed the focus and the lighting. The only thing I'd change is to reshoot it without the yellow fabric in the right corner.

Personally, I don't care for the gauze around-the-head look, so I like some of your other shots of Michelle in your port better. However, the material does put the focus on the face ... and therefore the makeup. I see why the MUA likes it.

Not sure what the yellow fabric in the corner is...

Thanks, Chuck. That might explain it a bit. I was going to title the thread "I don't like this ...Everyone Else Does ... Why?"

The yellow fabric is the sofa. I could probably chop it out of the corner, but it would still show through the sheer fabric.

She was in almost the same position as this, but in different hair and makeup.

You could always PS the couch away by adding more of the shear material.

That's a thought, kg. Also, most of it would disappear if I crop it to 8x10.

Actually, the couch didn't faze me until Chuck mentioned it. Or maybe I should just shut up and accept the fact that a lot of people like the image, even if I don't.

I am criticized all the time for not white balancing a shot - so i understand you may like this tone, and we are all free to our artistic expression. However if you assume the white background of this page is white and the gauze fabric is white you will see the different hue.

Try white balancing it - using even the auto color on photoshop and you m,ay find you like that better.

For me it helps the couch as it no longer has a dirty color and the eyes stand out a bit more in my opinion.

I think that couch has to go - not to the dump but as a background - it is the color - it appears dated and the color is neither flat nor vibrant and has a weave that dates it. Rather than being a stimulating aspect of the photos is detracts from it.

Gus,

WB is something that never even crossed my mind -- thanks. I probably didn't overpower the light coming in from the window enough either. I tried a couple different temperatures with the raw file and I can definitely see a difference. I'll play around a bit and see which I like better.

I think my whole "problem" with the image is that it strikes me as one of those cliche things we see too much, which is what (I think) Chuck was saying. I don't think any amount of manipulation is going to make me like it better. But, hey, the customer likes it so who am I to complain?

Posing her on the couch was not my idea (nor is it my couch). Actually I'm surprised that the couch wasn't covered with those plastic slipcovers.
