Lighting too harsh. Static pose with a odd lean to the pose. Need more fill light to fill in the shadows. A hair light to simulate sun behind subject would work better with the background choice to make it look more realistic.

I agree with Mr Smith, you need more light on her face. Also if you cropped to the "rule of thirds" it could help a lot.

A few C&C..

1) Consider softening the light
2) Add another light (or a reflector) to fill in the other side a bit more.
3) It might just be due to resizing, but your focus seems a bit off to me.
4) Why did you crop the shot to an odd size (almost square, but not)?
5) Nice job on being willing to try different poses! Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't -- but you have to try to find the great ones.

...but please don't let it slow you down. As long as you have a subject willing to stand there, click that shutter!

Thanks to you all! I also think that one of my major problems is that my light meter hasn't arrived yet and I was just guessing at the exposure. Will post more once my meter arrives

If you were shooting digital then you can use the histogram and a gray card to zero in on exact exposures. But as for that, the exposure was not really an issue with the photo, but rather the lighting ratio. A meter can help there, because then you can measure the exact power of each light in the scene.

Cheers,
