A shot of my wife with her guitar using techniques I learned at Rolando's workshop in LA.

interesting idea, what did you use for lighting? Its too red for my taste maybe an adjustment in white balance is in order. I like dramatic lighting so for me it has too much light, keep a look out on details like the cable of the lamp in the table and the line intersecting the top of the guitar with the lamp.

keep on shooting, the idea is very good

Hi,

The photo seems very busy. In the background you've got a table with a lamp with a cord dangling. Beside the lamp is a small plant. Behind your wife are bookcases, vases and a picture. On the arm of the chair is a red blanket, perhaps meant to compliment your wife's flower? On the floor is a beautiful rug on top of wood grain floor. Each of the walls is a different color. There is a lot happening in the photograph, and we haven't even discussed the main subject.

I'd eliminate as much of the distracting elements as possible, and then just focus on your wife with her guitar. Perhaps move the table out of the way. Reposition the chair such that only the orange wall behind her is visible. Move the rug so it is just the wood floor, chair (w/o blanket on the arm), and orange wall. You can play with her positioning to capture the light the way you want it.

I hope these comments were of value to you.

Best regards,
Kevin

I don't know what Rolando taught you but after looking at the images in your portfolio-forget it and stick to what you do best.

Like Rick, I looked at your portfolio. There's some excellent stuff there, IMO. I won't go so far as he and say stick to what you already do so well, but the image above isn't nearly so polished as much of what you've posted - and I agree with most of what Cuervo and Kevin have already said.
So now you want to shoot a glamorous photo of your wife. Could it be that the two of you feel a bit awkward working together at this? When I started shooting my wife, that was the case. I was quite surprised to learn that I could get much more relaxed and intimate images of virtual strangers than of my wife. Perhaps that's a factor here - you're letting yourself think like a husband and not like the image creator?
IMunqualifiedO, the warm color works pretty well, but the background IS pretty cluttered and distracting, the headstock of the guitar interacts badly (visually) with the lamp and cords, and while I really like the red flower, on my monitor at least, her hair isn't separated from the background.
My suggestion is that you and that very lovely and elegant woman just keep working at it. Joke with her during the shoot, make it more fun.
Thanks for sharing - hope to see more.

Thanks guys, I really wanted to bust out of my typical shooting and get into a far more glam lighting set up. I've appreciated everything you said and I hope to re-shoot soon.
