The hot tub is back in operation and was the last repair project from hurricane Ivan in 2004. Now that it's back up, I'll be using it more in my photography. The followng image is offered for your review and critique. Technical data follows below.

Finally Fixed The Hot Tub...

For the shoot this weekend I used a Nikon D70 w/70-200 Zoom tethered to a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Camera Control Pro. For lighting I used a Nikon wireless CLS SU-800 Commander on camera to control 2 SB-800s in Westcott 28" SBs, A1 as Main (Camera left @ 0 EV) and B1 as Fill (Camera right @ -1 EV). I used 1 SB-600 in a Westcott 16" SB on a Manfrotto Boom as C1 Accent (Overhead @ +1 EV) and 1 SB-800 w/diffuser as C2 Background (Camera left @ 0 EV). Exposure at ISO 200 was F2.8 @ 1/500, and 105mm. Location is in my home, model is my wife, Jan, and the water temperature was about 100F.

Thanks in advance,
Doc

PS I'm working up an image of the lighting setup and will post it as soon as I'm satisfied with it.

Ok, you can skip the lighting diagram.

First, your wife is very attractive for her age. At least I can assume she is in her late 40's or 50's. Looks nice. I'd ask her to drop the top but she'd probably kill me.

That being said, this lighting is dull and boring, flat. You used a whole bunch of lights and all kinds of gadgets and didn't do any better than if you had used natural light.

Skip all the SB 4500million00000's and Nikon Commanders and tethered laptop (near a hot tub?) and try to do this with one light and then add the others as accents to do specific things if the 1 light doesn't do it. I bet you could use 1 light and natural light and blow this image away.

Lights are great toys. FYI, i have the entire Nikon CLS lighting system as well, so I know what it can do.

BUT, the big but, just because you have the lights doesn't mean you have to use all of them. Make the lights do something. You pretty much could have gotten the same lighting effect by bouncing one light off the ceiling.

Your lights don't add any interest, any intrigue, shadow, color, texture, warmth, cold, style, not a thing.

I hope you don't mind a critical critique, I saw your educational background and figured you had been challenged to do better once or twice before. make this the third time.

Obligatory pic: (Playboy Playmate Lani Todd shot with 2 lights)

Thanks, Glenn... That's what I'm here for! The camera/laptop combo was about 20 feet away.

Thanks again,
Doc

Does that mean I shouldn't post my new thread on a photo with 27 lights, 4 assistants, 3 laptops and two waterfalls?

NOTE:Right at this moment your photo is not showing up and I can't reach your site either, so couldn't see the photo of Lani. Time 3:47pm 04/10/2007 (Texas time).

cheers,
rfs

I have no problem with using tons of lights and all that crap...I just want to make sure that the lights actually have meaning.

Glenn -

Great work with Lani. How would you have lit the scene I posted with natural light, or one, or two lights?

Thanks in advance,
Doc

i'd show you but there is probably a rule somewhere that states:

G1 rule, section 501.3C, paragraph 21b, line 457C; to wit, all life members of this forum are forbidden to post advice to other members on the alternate Tuesdays of the 4th month of the year, except when the Moon is in the delinquent stage over the Tropic of Virginity, regarding that sub-paragraph and expressly not referencing full use of the entire photographic equipmentalization of the current ownership of this forum and its said representatives, and said lighting advice shall not be offered or endeared without full susquetation of the lamper of delineation of the rules of G!, except under penalty of perjury or death or use of Alien Bees, whichever may occur first.

So bottom line, I'd love to help you but I would probably be breaking the rules here.
