Hey guys,

Here's another one of Zuly from this shoot.

Lemme know what you think!

Sam

There is a little more nostril emphasis than I like and the eyes need catchlights. In this example, I think it would work better with the head titled down more to minimize the nostril effect, and that might also bring a catchlight into the eye. Anyway, food for thought.

Here is an example of how I often overcome the nostril and catchlight problem!

I don't know, Sam. That large dark area - her left eye socket and thereabouts - too big, too dark - I keep looking for detail therein. Perhaps because it's silhouetted on the viewer's right? Perhaps because my monitor is dark? The nostrils don't bother me nearly so much as that dark. Or that dark/light juxtaposition. Whichever. FWIW, I like the "dead" eye and the glistening lips. Actually, if I crop out everything to the right of the point where the neck meets the lighter background, I get a frank image of an isolated individual.
Film or digital?
Thanks for sharing.

Nice work Sam, good to see out here again, hopefully I'll have something new soon. BTW, I don't mind the low angle going up, done it myself, even got the hairs on the inside of the nostrils to show up.

RFS - Thanks for commenting! I've got another one I'm working on with her head tilted down more. If it turns out okay I'll post that one, too.

John - Yeah, there's not lots of detail in the hair, but on the monitor I'm using now I can see some (on my laptop monitor it's not nearly as noticeable, though). Would you be able to crop the image the way you mentioned and post it here? I'm not totally sure I see the crop you're describing -- I'm a little slow, heh. I did try a few crops before I posted, but I wasn't sure which one I liked best.

This one's film, too -- TMAX 400, rated at 100 (I'm not sure what developer the lab uses. I wish I had the time and means to develop it all myself to have a little more control, but if I did that I'd never sleep at all. ) A fair amount of retouching's been done to this after the initial scan, though. Thanks for commenting John!

Isaiah - Thanks man, and can't wait to see what you come up with, too! And about the up-the-nose angles, yeah, I guess it just boils down to personal preference, and it's one of those things that hasn't really bothered me. One of my favorite painters of all time at the turn of the century (not the last one, the other one ) made a painting of a woman with her face upturned, nostrils exposed. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Gustav_Klimt_039.jpg) Maybe it's different in paintings?
