Hey y'all,

Here's some shots of Kat again, this time a campaign for a cosmetics company for school. The first is kind of an overall "introductory" shot for the campaign, and the others are meant to focus on different areas: nails, lips, eyes, and face, respectively.

Good or bad, lemme know!

Sam

Tech specs: Nikon D-100, 105mm macro lens
Four lights. Key light was a beauty dish. Two shoot-through umbrellas on either side behind her to both highlight either side of her and light the background. There was one more barebulb light directly behind her head on the background. There were also two white foamcore bookends on either side of her in the front.

I love the lighting and also the skin texture - Great shots.
Have you done much work on the skin in PS ?
I am thinking of buying a beauty dish soon, could you tell me what type you used on this.

I like the composition overall. However, I do think some warming up of the shots would help. In the third shot the models face just looks distorted. The forth shot the skin tones are distracting from one side of the models face to the other. A little more contrast would help overall as well IMO.

Lee -- Thank you! There was actually a fair amount of work done to these in post. Usually I start off with the healing brush for noticeable blemishes, and then after that I used some beauty retouching techniques I learned in Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers by Martin Evening (really great book, if you don't have it).

The beauty dish I used was the 22" dish Alien Bees has for their lights (http://www.alienbees.com/22r.html) on a B1600. Thank you, and hope this helps!

Teddy -- Thanks! About the warmth or lack thereof of the shots, I think I ended up cooling them down some in post -- I think they were warmer as shot originally, I'll have to see. In the third shot, is it the crop that makes her face look distorted, you think? This was cropped in some from the original, where you can see her chin. And the skin tones in the fourth one -- yup, I can see what you're saying. I know skin tone is so important with beauty shots, just figuring out how to get them perfect is what I'm working on. Thank you for taking the time!

Sam,

I would like to have seen less flare from the background coming onto her skin. I would have her center her eyes a little more in the sockets, because she looks a little unfocused, kind of vapid.

I think I would have liked stronger blush/contour on her cheeks to bring them to the same contrast as her lips and eyes. She is either just a little too faded or not faded enough, if you know what I mean.

I like number 4 the best, but overall they are all pretty good.

Whoops, sorry, didn't mean to ignore ya. Sometimes I forget to reply.

Thanks very much for the comments! I think I see what you're saying about the cheek definition, too.

Thanks again!

Sam

Just my 2 cents, about your third photo someone said that feels some distortion, there is no distortion, but crop was too tight on the left and cutting her right eye, so close to the pupil, wasn't the best decision.
