The lovely and talented Katie, an Atlanta-area fashion model, totally out of character in my attempt to evoke both the look of the femme fatale of the 1940's Film Noir movies also and the work of George Hurrell and Clarence Sinclair Bull. (My signature image shows the real Katie.) Constructive comments and criticism welcome. More to come if the responses are favorable.

Technical particulars: Fuji S3 in F1 Mode; ISO 100; Nikkor 24-85 3.5-4.5 zoom at 42mm and f8; four-light Novatron 400 setup. Image is exactly as I shot it (that is, no additional cropping, retouching, dodging, burning, or other image enhancement), but converted in Photoshop to B&W using the green channel to darken Katie's lipstick.

Note: The real green olive on a toothpick wanted to float in the water I used in the martini glass, so I substituted a grape, which sank to the bottom.

Well I'm always a bit apprehensive about critiquing a photo that has a "if the responses are favorable" line attached to it. Does that mean you don't want us to find any problems with the photo?

The photo doesn't have the typical Hurrell look. Keep in mind that his photos were heavily retouched and the faces would be absolutely perfect. Hot spots on the forehead would be removed, etc. Also the blacks would usually have detail in them whereas the blacks in yours lack much detail.

Still the image you present is on the right track and with a bit more work you may be able to duplicate the style. Try the main light higher to get a more loop lighting effect. Usually Hurrell had a boom and moved the main light out over the model. But also keep in mind that he usually shot with the sure knowledge that retouching would be done.

Thanks for your post. This is my first post on Glamour1 for critique. I welcome any comments to help me do better next time, which you graciously provided and I certainly appreciate. You've confirmed that I'm on the right track. Although I have not noticed any trend on G1 for destructive criticism, I quit participating in another photo discussion forum because of such an overwhelming tendency, hence my comment about "... if the responses are favorable."

Katie's dress is a complete void because it is black velvet. However, her gloves have a sheen, which does not display on the posted image but is visible on the image on my computer. I'll tweak for better display later.
