Genesis does not identify the serpent as satan.

The image is...well.....very creative.

It's about time I started posting pictures here, instead of commenting on non-photo threads.

I like everything about yours, except I can't make up my mind if I would prefer her eyes open.

Here is my version.

Assuming that's he's using the Genesis account for is story line, then the eyes should be closed at this point. In the second image, after the bite is taken, then he should have her eyes open wide in surprise. Here is the context:

Quote:
[Gen 3:5] For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
[Gen 3:6] And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
[Gen 3:7] And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Cheers,
rfs

There are several account of Adam and Eve. Some are more explicit about the identify of the "serpent" and make it clear it is Satan. In some of the ancient Hebrew stories, Eve was not the first wife of Adam, but rather Lilith and you see more of Satan in that story. There are also other passages later on in the Bible that tie the serpent to Satan. In any event is a more or less accepted part of the classical story that the Serpent was the agent of Satan or Satan himself, so it is proper imagery to consider in any artistic work that portrays the story of Adam and Eve. There are thousands of such representations in art down through the ages as this is a very oft visited theme in the artistic world. This image does a good job of capturing the exact statement in Genesis about the eyes being closed. The only problem is that it was a serpent and not a snake (see Genesis 3:14).

Disclaimer: Keep in mind that the above information is provided as part of a story that is in the Book of Genesis and should not be taken as a "discussion of religion" but rather as discussion of the content of an ancient story that has been preserved to our modern times.

Cheers,
rfs

Since this was in the Reviews and Critiques section, my comments will be in that context.

I believe when working with any "historical theme", it is important to be as accurate as possible in the details, such as props, and styles. I believe items such as hairstyles, or lack thereof in some cases, should be a major consideration. In the image, I see a hairstyle that conflicts with the time frame of the story. Other considerations would be makeup, but of course that can be, to some extend, something to enhance the face, I guess. Oh, and , it is just a minor item, but why do I visualize Eve with no belly button?

I also believe the background is distracting, and in my opinion, the lighting or shadow pattern on Eve and the snake do not seem to match.

We're on agreement in making the photographic scene match the essence of the story, but often times artists set these ancient stories into modern settings. I can think of countless paintings of religious scenes during the middle ages that had every character in the story in clothing, hair and body styles of the era in which they were painted. I agree in general with your comments about the distracting background and lighting problems.

I like your image, by the way. The lipstick was probably the result of the red apple.

Cheers,
rfs
