The goal was a to capture a tragic or sad feel. The model did her own makeup and hair. Lighting was a AB400 and Giant Softbox off to her left at about 45 degrees and a white circular reflector on the other side. I'm pretty happy with it, but I think it could be better... All advice welcome and appreciated!

Thanks,
-Joshua

I don't think it looks sad or tragic, unless you think the punk thing is sad or tragic. It's a nice image though.

I think it captures a sad feel. But, the exposure is off. Some of the white areas are totally blown. Also the background is distracting, especially the light switches and the vertical line from one of the doors running up out of the back of the head. The black items in the lower part of the photo are also distracting.

Cheers,
rfs

I actually blew out the highlights on purpose, as well as increased the contrast, in post as I felt doing that added to the "punky" feeling of the image. I agree about the light switches and I debated photoshopping them out... I guess I sould.

The items in the foreground are actually pieces of the skirt that she cut off earlier in the shoot, but I see what you mean.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not sure the punk look and the sad look really go together. Since you were working for the sad look, you might want to use a more conventional outfit and zero in on the emotion. The more different things going on in a photo the more difficult it is to achieve that sad expression. My earlier example was targeted toward a sad or hurt look combined with a bit of surprise. I had her say "oh my" at the moment I would shoot. But your attempt did have a "sad feel" to it more because of the pose than anything else. The legs posed like that usually suggest sadness (to me). Also the black splotches under the eyes which suggested running makeup from crying helped to create the sadness feel.

Cheers,
rfs

Sorry - Don't want to be sad tonight. I think the image is way more punky than sad. I'm not sure where it fits.

Nice photo,

Perhaps some side lighting, a more subdued background, and a black bounce could do the trick. To me there's nothing like subdued color to evoke sadness. The photo makes me think she was at a party and found her boyfriend with another girl or something. Those are my thoughts on it anyway.

going for a trragic or sad look requires a bit more than smudging the model's mascara. it would have helped if the model emoted a bit of sadness or tragedy. i like the image. my first thought was it seems cropped a little too loosely and too centered.
