This is my first post to Glamour1. I'm looking for any thoughts on how I might improve on this.

Thanks in advance, Jim

Wow! Wonderful shot for a first showing!

You did a lot of things right, especially for a first post.

The one main thing that I would have done differently is to have her eyes in-focus and sharp. You have everything blurred, which makes it look like you are just out of focus but I know you weren't. The two main things that you want to have sharp in most photos are the eyes and the teeth (if they show in the smile).

Also, and this is just my personal preference, I would have added a 1/2 or 1 full Fstop more fill flash, at least on her face. But I only see one catch light in her eyes, so maybe you just had a reflector off to the non-flash side or that is just ambient reflections doing the fill lighting, but I would have increased it a bit.

Just wondering if this is a scan from film? It has that look and I'm not sure. I like the pose though and agree with the said comments above about the lighting.

Give me a break! All I (and hopefully anyone with eyes) should be seeing in this is an out-of-focus picture - period. Any bozo with a point-and-shoot, fixed-focus camera can do as well.

This is the type of bs that makes every other comment suspect for me. It seems like just about anything posted here, from totally outstanding stuff to things like this seem to get the "great picture" comments, like you're not allowed to say a bad picture is bad. I'm not a pro, but I do know bad when I see it.

As someone who is trying to learn the correct way to take pictures, it would be much better to see some honest reviews. If I were to take the comments about this picture as valid, I might as well take my glasses off, turn off the autofocus, and snap away.

If I'm missing something (and I don't think I am), please, please enlighten me.

RFL, You're correct, this was a scan from a film print.

Goldy, You're incorrect in your assumption. This was not a point & shoot, nor is it out of focus.

The shot was made with a Pentax MX with a 100 mm lense. Lighting was a Norman 800 at 200 ws with a single white umbrella forward and to her left and a gold reflector to her right so the shoulder and arm would have some fill and not fade to black. Your perception of an out of focus shot resulted from too strong of a softening filter (B) while shooting wide open to produce a very shallow depth of field.

But thanks for your comments.

Z7 - Thanks for the comments on the fill. I tried but had too much spill where I wanted to maintain the higher contrast.

RFL & Z7 - thanks for your "Constructive & professional critiques"

Jim,

Interesting photo and I agree about the eyes. I use umbrellas as well. What size umbrella did you use for this shot?

JW,
As I recall, I used a relatively small 32" hex for the light and a 20" square as the reflector. I used the smaller ones to confine the light tto the subject.
Thanks for asking,
Jim

The lighting is nice, but I think it could be improved. I personally don't care for the bright spot on her right (camera-left) cheek. The same for the bright spot on her right (camera-left) bicep. You could have avoided the former by tilting her head slightly, and you could have avoided the latter by moving her elbow just a bit.

Then again, I did something similar with the model's hand in the image below to add some interest to a dark area of the image, and it was a Showcase Image at some other place. Maybe you were doing the same thing.

As to the image as a whole, however, I have to agree with Goldy's assessment, if not with his overly-caustic language. If you added the blur intentionally, you over-did it. The overall effect is simply that of a poorly-focused image. Sorry. (As an aside, Goldy shouldn't be providing a critique without posting an image of his own. I note that he doesn't even have any images in his portfolio.)

For TheGoldy---

While we appreciate your participation on our forums, don't be so insulting. Use tact. Calling people bozo's and your off-color remarks are not necessary. In addition, please post an image when making a critique or at least add some images on your portfolio here. Please read our guidelines. If you have any problems, contact me personally via PM. Regards, Rolando

FT,
Thanks for the comments. The problem is simply to much softening on the camera, not in PS. I guess when I viewed it I felt a little surreal flavor and intrigue that made me want more. In any event, your comments are appreciated.

Rolando,
Thanks for yours as well.

Jim
