I took these at a Mola workshop at the Canadian Photographic Center in Toronto given by their inventor Walter Melrose.

The large mola dish was close, low and angled up with a foamcore roof over the model Natalie. I was shooting over the top of the dish.

I invite comment on the shadows beside her nose near the top in particular. Is it from a wide light source making cross shadows from the bridge of the nose?

I think the shadows on the nose are a result of having the dish so low.

I think I see a couple of problems. First, I believe to much light is coming from too low. That gives an unnatural look to the image. Second, I believe you shot from too low an angle in relation to the light. In addition, I believe you have a little exposure error in that her face is close to being washed out.

The high foam core reflector worked well, just raise the light a bit next time.

Yes, these images were a bit overexposed.

How would using a higher camera angle effect the light?

i shoot that way fairly often myself, i.e., my large mola low and angled up with foamcore above it in kind of a clamshell setup. the bounce from the foamcore fills in so you don't end up with that horror movie look to the image.

mola workshop sounds pretty cool. plus, with mister mola himself!

It's her nostrils creating the shadow. A single light source cannot possibly create "cross" shadows.

On edit...

unless you're using a mirror as a reflector.

I can see that it's the nostrils creating the shadow now that you point it out.

Now I think the biggest problem with this is the over-exposure washing out her face. Otherwise I might have gotten away with the clamshell light positioning.

Thanks everyone.
